Summer Solstice Celebration and Slow-Smoked BBQ Lunch!

Thursday, June 21, 2018 (10:00 AM - 1:00 PM) (PDT)

Description

Portland Rescue Mission and Twende Solar are completing a significant solar project at Portland Rescue Mission’s recovery center for women and children at 132nd and NE Halsey in northeast Portland. The unusually large solar panel installation will offset more than 100,000 KWH of electricity per year – 40 percent of the facility’s electricity requirement. The installation was made possible by generous donations of solar panels and gear, plus installation labor, from the region’s solar industry, and those who support Portland Rescue Mission’s homeless services efforts. At today’s rates, the project will save Portland Rescue Mission about $300,000 in electricity charges over the next 25 years, allowing more donations to support emergency services and restorative support to the region’s homeless and hurting. A lower utility burden helps Portland Rescue Mission provide a warm and safe place for 40 women and 25 children to restore their lives at its Shepherd’s Door location.

The electricity savings equates to providing 33,000 additional nights of overnight care or meals to 500,000 people.

Twende Solar pursues projects benefiting underserved communities in global markets. This will be Twende Solar’s first opportunity to do so domestically, bringing much needed relief to the homeless population while providing relief to a nonprofit that cannot benefit from traditional solar energy tax incentives.
