Book Club: The Immortal Irishman

Tuesday, July 11, 2017 (6:00 PM - 9:00 PM) (PDT)

Description

We’re meeting at AM:PM PR to discuss "The Immortal Irishman" by Timothy Egan, a preeminent Pacific Northwest-based journalist and contributor to The New York Times

“The Immortal Irishman” follows the life of Thomas Francis Meagher (pronounced like “Maher”) and will be interesting to Irish, Pacific Northwest and general history enthusiasts. It’ll also be interesting to those inspired by political movements. Many political movements in the U.S. and abroad have centered around the youthful vigor commonly found on college campuses. Meagher’s attempt to, you know, overthrow the British Empire with a coalition of poets and intellectuals, wasn’t much different.

We’ll discus themes from the book and see where the conversation takes us. Due to our intrinsic interest in marketing, we'll explore some of the strategies and tactics Egan's team deployed to promote the title.

In addition to a discussion, we’ll have a leader from the Portland chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians join to share news of fundraising efforts for Portland’s Irish Famine Memorial – currently the only such memorial located on the West Coast.
